Neuroscience and Neuromodulation offer fascinating intersections that could inspire each other by linking insights into the structure and function of the brain with the development of innovative therapeutic methods and techniques.

Neuroscience explores the complexities of the nervous system, aiming to understand brain function and the underlying causes of neurological disorders. This understanding is crucial for developing targeted treatments that address specific neurological issues effectively.

What is Neuromodulation? ​

 

Neuromodulation refers to a range of different techniques for directly influencing the nervous system through electrical, magnetic or infrared light stimuli to influence its activity. These methods are distinguished between invasive and non-invasive techniques.

Non-Invasive Neuromodulation

 

Neuromodulation therapy refers to the use of clinically proven, drug-free, and non-invasive treatment technologies such as tDCS (transcranial direct current stimulation), taVNS (transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation), TPS (transcranial pulse stimulation), tLNS (transcutaneous laryngeal nerve stimulation), and lFMS (low-frequency magnetic stimulation). These methods are supported by extensive scientific research, which confirms their effectiveness and medical reliability in treating a wide range of diseases and disorders.

  • Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS): Delivers a constant, low current to the brain via electrodes on the scalp, used to enhance cognitive performance and treat neuropsychiatric disorders.

  • Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (taVNS): Stimulation of the vagus nerve through the skin, typically at the ear.

  • Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS): Uses magnetic fields to stimulate nerve cells in the brain, often used for depression and other mental health disorders

  • Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS): Known for pain relief. Employs electrical currents to stimulate nerves for therapeutic purposes.

How does tDCS work?

 

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) is a gentle neuromodulation technology. It uses a constant, low-level direct current to modify the membrane potentials of nerve cells, enabling them to reach their optimal neuronal potential.

tDCS employs weak direct currents applied through electrodes on the scalp to influence brain activity.

Depending on the location of stimulation,

  • not only cognitive functions such as learning ability, memory, mood, and motivation are specifically optimized,

  • but also complex coordinative motor processes.

 

This gentle neuromodulation has proven effective in modulating neuronal activities, supporting neuroplasticity, alleviating pain, and promoting natural healing processes in the brain, thus improving learning and mood in neurological and psychiatric conditions.

In Austria, tDCS has a long tradition of research. In the last 5-10 years, there has been an enormous surge in scientific research worldwide.

 

How does taVNS work?

 

Transauricular Vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) is another non-invasive method where the Vagus nerve is stimulated through electrical stimulation over a specific area on the ear.

This technique leads to an increase in parasympathetic activity with a positive influence on heart rate, digestion, tissue regeneration, and mood regulation.

This technique is being explored for treating conditions such as depression, anxiety disorders, and migraines.

It is also used to improve overall well-being and reduce stress. With minimal pain and very low risk, it can also deliver impressive results, although its exact effectiveness and mechanisms are subjects of ongoing research.
